Recently on my weekly Relationship Radio Show on in Atlanta, I had the privilege of interviewing relationship coach Bj Moorer. Bj has a bit of a different view of the relationship world.

Bj's interesting take on relationships is best summed up by the title of her brand new ebook "Love, Lies, Men and Women: The Lies We Tell and the Damage They Do"

In the series she is creating, Bj looks at the lies men tell women, the lies women tell men, and the lies couples tell each other about their relationship. While Bj covers all the different types of lies, you must start somewhere, and Bj begins in Volume 1 of her series with the lies men tell women.

That was the topic of my recent interview with her, and now we'll take a look at the top 5 lies men tell women.

Lie 1 - "I'll call you tomorrow" - Men say this so often, and get away with it, because women want to believe it. Bj's advice is to not wait by the phone for the call and go live your life. If the call does not come in the first few days, it is not coming. Move on.

Lie 2 - "I love you"- Too bad this is a common lie that reduces the value of some precious words. Bj' warning is that when it is said too soon in a relationship it is often an attempt at controlling the other person.

Lie 3 - "I'm not married" - The problem is most men say this and most adult men are married so you do the math. If you have a gut feeling that you are being lied to about this, ask for his home phone number and see how he responds.

Lie 4 - "No one understands me like you do" - This one can be designed to get you to feel sorry for him. You know for certain that this is just massive manipulation when it is closely followed by a large request such as borrowing money or asking to move in with you.

Lie 5 - "I'm not seeing anyone else" - Well, maybe. Pay attention to when and how this information is offered in a relationship. Just like some of the other lies, offering this information too soon or when it is not requested is a huge warning sign that someone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

One powerful piece of advice offered by coach Bj is to trust your gut instinct. If something is not making sense or adding up, pursue it. Don't try to talk yourself out of it or excuse your intuition away. Pay attention.

Are you a smart dater? Before you answer yes, I've got to tell you that in my experience as a singles and relationship coach, most people are not smart daters. Most singles make at least one if not a series of the most common dating mistakes. Let's take a closer look at each of these mistakes and what to do instead.

Which of these common dating mistakes are you making? Recently on my weekly Relationship Radio Show in Atlanta I had the pleasure of interviewing the husband and wife psychology team of Judith Sherven and Jim Sniechowski on the subject of smart dating. Judith and Jim have designed their own Smart Dating Program for Singles.

According to Judith and Jim, the single biggest mistake that almost every single makes is "playing the dating game." The opposite of smart dating is not dumb dating, it's traditional dating. Quoting Judith and Jim "The traditional way of dating does make it a 'game' and that's the problem - because meeting and mating isn't ever going to succeed when approached like a game."

Approaching dating as a traditional game leads to the following "games" -

- Playing hard to get

- Acting mysterious

- Building up a man's ego

- Acting like her Prince Charming

- Pursuit and capture

- It's just as easy to marry a rich man

- Gotta keep her guessing

- And on and on it goes

Smart dating allows you to approach dating with your head up, knowing what you want and how to get it, and being yourself. So many times, in an attempt to put our best foot forward and make a good impression, we act like someone we are not. Then we wonder why we are so disappointed when we discover the person is not who they portrayed themselves to be. Or you are the one who disappoints because you are not as you portrayed yourself to be.

This false portrayal is based on the fear of rejection. When approach dating as a game, we give a ton of power to the other person, and we can be rejected!

When you approach dating from a smart perspective you cannot be rejected!

Think of it this way - When you are looking for a house, you have a list in mind about which house and what kind of house will be the right one for you. If you or your real estate agent shows you a house that in many ways is a great house, but just not the right one for you, for whatever reason, it is not an issue of rejection. It an issue of not the right fit.

You would not however, try to make the house fit when it can not, or go home feeling rejected by the house. That sounds silly, but it is what we do in relationships.

So get very clear about what you want in a relationship, look for that fit, and do not settle for less. The beauty is when you find someone that fits you and you fit that someone.

For as long as I can remember asbestos has been around. During the latter part of the 19th century, asbestos was discovered to be an insulating material that also made structures stronger. Though not used as heavily as it once was, it is still used for particular purposes.

After this "wonder" material was installed in many houses,

buildings and other structures throughout the decades, asbestos was discovered to be cancer-causing in humans. Besides being causing cancer, it also can cause a multitude of other diseases and conditions. Asbestos isn't a problem when it remains undisturbed. The problem is how it was installed and used - as freely as fiberglass now is used. When the fibers of disturbed asbestos mix into the air supply, people began to inhale it and the conditions and illnesses set in. One such condition is mesothelioma, which invades mesothelial membranes of the human body causing cells to become cancerous.

Another severe condition is asbestosis, which is when the fibers of asbestos get imbedded in the lungs of a person. It wasn't until the 1970s that laws were instated to protect workers who installed asbestos to use the proper equipment and wear the right safety gear in working with this deadly agent. But by the time the laws & regulations were instated, many workers already had exposure to asbestos fibers working what now are considered asbestos jobs.

So for example, if you were get a sale from every tenth visitor, and you net a profit of $20 from each sale, then you can't pay more than $2 for each click without operating at a loss. In practice, you might make one sale for every 500 or so clicks and pay perhaps 15 or 20 cents for each visitor, depending on your market.

It's absolutely crucial for you to know your visitor to sales ratio.

It's also important to keep that ratio as high as possible, and that means only bidding on relevant keywords. If you pay for visitors who are looking for something completely different to the services you're offering, you're just throwing your money away. They aren't going to buy, and even at five cents a shot, those wasted nickels soon add up. On the other hand, because you can pay so little, it is worth bidding on as many relevant keywords as possible.

The key is to balance high payments for top keywords with low payments that bring in less traffic.

You should also consider the quality of visitors the site will send you. The more targeted a directory, the more your visitor to sale ratio may improve-and that might make it worth improving your bid price.

Submitting your site to a PPC is certainly a lot faster than submitting to a search engine or a directory. You must, however, make sure you consider the following:

•The maximum amount you can bid (can't stress that enough!)

•The keywords you wish to bid on.

•The titles and descriptions of the site.

That last point is very important for making the most of PPC's. Just because you don't have to worry about putting keywords in your title and descriptions to please a program doesn't mean relevance isn't important. On the contrary, relevance still matters. You need to let the user know that your site is exactly what they're looking for. That means putting the keyword in the title and having a catchy, informative description. Remember, the more good clicks you get, the more money you'll make.

1993–94: Sexual abuse accusations and first marriage

Life and Career of Michael Jacson

Jackson gave a 90-minute interview with Oprah Winfrey in February 1993, his first television interview since 1979. He grimaced when speaking of his childhood abuse at the hands of his father; he believed he had missed out on much of his childhood years, admitting that he often cried from loneliness. He denied previous tabloid rumors that he bought the bones of the Elephant Man or slept in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. The entertainer went on to dispel suggestions that he bleached his skin, stating for the first time that he had vitiligo. The interview was watched by an American audience of 90 million, becoming the fourth most-viewed non-sport program in U.S. history. It also increased awareness of vitiligo, a relatively unknown condition before then. Dangerous re-entered the album chart in the top 10, more than a year after its original release.

Jackson was accused of child sexual abuse by a 13-year-old boy named Jordan Chandler and his father Evan Chandler. The friendship between Jackson and Evan Chandler broke down. Sometime afterwards, Evan Chandler was tape-recorded saying amongst other things, "If I go through with this, I win big-time. There's no way I lose. I will get everything I want and they will be destroyed forever...Michael's career will be over". A year after they had met, under the influence of sodium amytal, a controversial sedative, Jordan Chandler told his father that Jackson had touched his penis. Evan Chandler and Jackson, represented by their legal teams, then engaged in unsuccessful negotiations to resolve the issue in a financial settlement; the negotiations were initiated by Chandler but Jackson did make several counter offers. Jordan Chandler then told a psychiatrist and later police that he and Jackson had engaged in acts of kissing, masturbation and oral sex, as well as giving a detailed description of what he alleged were the singer's genitals.

An official investigation began, with Jordan Chandler's mother adamant that there was no wrong doing on Jackson's part. Neverland Ranch was searched; multiple children and family members denied that he was a pedophile. Jackson's image took a further turn for the worse when his older sister La Toya Jackson accused him of being a pedophile, a statement she later retracted. Jackson agreed to a 25-minute strip search, conducted at his ranch. The search was required to see if a description provided by Jordan Chandler was accurate. Doctors concluded that there were some strong similarities, but it was not a definitive match. Jackson made an emotional public statement on the events; he proclaimed his innocence, criticized what he perceived as biased media coverage and told of his strip search.

Jackson began taking painkillers, Valium and Ativan to help him cope with chronic pain a consequence to an accident involving the collapse of stage rigging during the Dangerous Tour and for joint inflammation from Lupus. Jackson started taking Xanax for panic attacks and stress stemming from the allegations made against him of child abuse. By the fall of 1993, Jackson was addicted to the drugs. His health deteriorated to the extent that he canceled the remainder of the Dangerous World Tour and went into drug rehabilitation for a few months. The stress of the allegations also caused Jackson to stop eating, and he lost a significant amount of weight. With his health in decline, Jackson's friends and legal advisers took over his defense and finances; they called on him to settle the allegations out of court, believing that he could not endure a lengthy trial.

Tabloid reaction to the allegations put Jackson in an unfavorable light. Complaints about the coverage and media included everything from bias against Jackson, accepting stories of alleged criminal activity for money to accepting confidential leaked material from the police investigation in return for money paid. On January 1, 1994, Jackson settled with the Chandler family and their legal team out of court, in a civil lawsuit for $22 million. After the settlement Jordan Chandler stopped co-operating with police regarding criminal proceedings. Jackson was never charged, and the state closed its criminal investigation, citing lack of evidence.

In May 1994, Jackson married singer-songwriter Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis Presley. They had first met in 1975 during one of Jackson's family engagements at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, and were reconnected through a mutual friend in early 1993. They stayed in contact every day over the telephone. As child molestation accusations became public, Jackson became dependent on Lisa Marie for emotional support; she was concerned about his faltering health and addiction to drugs. Lisa Marie explained, "I believed he didn't do anything wrong and that he was wrongly accused and yes I started falling for him. I wanted to save him. I felt that I could do it." In a phone call he made to her, she described him as high, incoherent and delusional. Shortly afterwards, she tried to persuade Jackson to settle the allegations out of court and go into rehabilitation to recover—he subsequently did both. Jackson proposed to Lisa Marie over the telephone towards the fall of 1993, saying, "If I asked you to marry me, would you do it?". Presley and Jackson married in the Dominican Republic in secrecy; the parties denied they had been married for nearly two months. The marriage was, in her words, "a married couple's life ... that was sexually active". At the time, the tabloid media speculated that the wedding was a ploy to prop up Jackson's public image in light of prior sexual abuse allegations. Jackson and Presley divorced less than two years later, remaining friendly.

In March 1991,Jackson renewed his contract with Sony for $65 million; a record breaking deal at the time, displacing Neil Diamond's renewal contract with Columbia Records. Jackson released his eighth album Dangerous in 1991. As of 2008, Dangerous has shipped 7 million copies in the U.S. and has sold 32 million copies worldwide; it is the most successful new jack swing album of all time. In the US, the album's first single "Black or White" was the album's biggest hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining there for seven weeks, with similar chart performances worldwide. The album's second single "Remember the Time" spent eight weeks in the top five in the US, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. In 1993, Jackson performed the song at the Soul Train Awards in a wheelchair, saying he had suffered an injury in rehearsals. In the UK and other parts of Europe, "Heal the World" was the biggest hit from the album; it sold 450,000 copies in the UK and spent five weeks at number two in 1992.

Jackson founded the "Heal the World Foundation" in 1992. The charity organization brought underprivileged children to Jackson's ranch, to go on theme park rides that Jackson had built on the property after he purchased it. The foundation also sent millions of dollars around the globe to help children threatened by war and disease. The Dangerous World Tour began on June 27, 1992, and finished on November 11, 1993. Jackson performed to 3.5 million people in 67 concerts. All profits from the concerts went to the "Heal the World Foundation", raising millions of dollars in relief. He sold the broadcast rights to his Dangerous world tour to HBO for $20 million, a record-breaking deal that still stands. Following the illness and death of Ryan White, Jackson helped draw public attention to HIV/AIDS, something that was still controversial at the time. He publicly pleaded with the Clinton Administration at Bill Clinton's Inaugural Gala to give more money to HIV/AIDS charities and research.

In a high-profile visit to Africa, Jackson visited several countries, among them Gabon and Egypt. His first stop to Gabon was greeted with a sizable reception of more than 100,000 people in "spiritual bedlam", some of them carrying signs that read, "Welcome Home Michael". In his trip to the Ivory Coast, Jackson was crowned "King Sani" by a tribal chief. He then thanked the dignitaries in French and English, signed official documents formalizing his kingship and sat on a golden throne while presiding over ceremonial dances.

One of Jackson's most acclaimed performances came during the halftime show at Super Bowl XXVII. As the performances began, Jackson was catapulted onto the stage as fireworks went off behind him. As he landed on the canvass, he maintained a motionless "clenched fist, standing statue stance", dressed in a gold and black military outfit and sunglasses; he remained completely motionless for several minutes while the crowd cheered. He then slowly removed his sunglasses, threw them away and began to sing and dance. His routine included four songs: "Jam", "Billie Jean", "Black or White" and "Heal the World". It was the first Super Bowl where the audience figures increased during the half-time show, and was viewed by 135 million Americans alone; Jackson's Dangerous album rose 90 places up the album chart.

Jackson was given the "Living Legend Award" at the 35th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. "Black or White" was Grammy nominated for best vocal performance. "Jam" gained two nominations: Best R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song.

Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American musician and entertainer who spent over forty years in the public eye, from being a child star with the Jackson 5 to becoming a successful solo artist. During his career, his changing appearance, health concerns, and diet were well documented. Up until the mid-1980s, Jackson's natural changing appearance through puberty and age garnered minimal media attention. However, by the mid-1980s the media believed that Jackson's appearance was being altered by something more than the aging process.
His skin tone gradually lightened, his nose and chin narrowed, and he lost weight. These changes progressively continued over the next twenty years. The lightened skin tone was initially due to the diseases vitiligo and lupus—with which Jackson was diagnosed in 1986—and the singer's personal choice to cover the blotched skin with make-up, something many sufferers do. Certain skin treatments for these conditions further lightened Jackson's skin. His altered facial features were the result of cosmetic surgery. By 1990, those close to the singer say he had undergone approximately ten procedures.
Jackson and some of his siblings state that, as adolescents, they were physically and emotionally abused by their father. In 2003, his father admitted to the BBC that he had whipped Jackson as a child. Jackson rarely spoke about the abuse of his childhood, but, in several interviews during which the subject was raised, he became very emotional and admitted that he would vomit before meeting his father. In court documents, some mental health experts have expressed the opinion that Jackson was psychologically a regressed ten-year-old. Some medical professionals have also publicly stated that he suffered from body dysmorphic disorder.
Jackson's appearance would also be altered by health problems, weight loss, stress and natural aging. Jackson decided to lose weight and became a vegetarian, using the term "a dancer's body" to describe his goal. He became dependent on prescription drugs and on one occasion he went into rehabilitation; drug use also affected his appearance. It was during periods of turmoil in Jackson's life that his weight and drug problems would resurface, often at the same time.

In 1986, the National Enquirer published a series of photographs of Jackson lying in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, claiming that he slept in the chamber to slow the aging process. Although the photographs were genuine, the claims were untrue; Jackson had disseminated the fabricated story himself. The singer was promoting his upcoming film Captain EO and wanted to promote a science fiction image of himself. Jackson had a fourth rhinoplasty and, wanting masculine features, had a cleft put in his chin. Then he starred in the Francis Ford Coppola-directed 3-D film Captain EO. It was the most expensive film produced on a per-minute basis at the time, and was later hosted in Disney theme parks. Disneyland featured the film in its Tomorrowland area for nearly 11 years, while Walt Disney World screened the film in its Epcot theme park from 1986 to 1994.

When Jackson bought a pet chimpanzee called Bubbles, it was reported as an example of increasing detachment from reality. In 2003, the singer claimed that Bubbles had been trained to use the toilet and to clean his own bedroom. Later, it was reported that Jackson bought the bones of The Elephant Man. Although untrue, it was a story that Jackson again disseminated to the tabloid press. These stories inspired the pejorative nickname "Wacko Jacko", which Jackson acquired the following year. He would eventually come to despise the nickname. Realizing his mistake, he stopped leaking untruths to the press. However due to the profit being made, the media began making up their own stories.

Jackson's skin was a medium-brown color for the entire duration of his youth, but starting in the early 1980s, his skin gradually grew paler. This change gained widespread media coverage, including rumors that Jackson was bleaching his skin. In the mid-1980s, Jackson was diagnosed with vitiligo and lupus; the latter was in remission in Jackson's case, and both illnesses made him sensitive to sunlight. The treatments he used for his condition further lightened his skin tone, and, with the application of pancake makeup to even out blotches, he could appear very pale. The structure of his face changed as well; several surgeons have speculated that Jackson had undergone multiple nasal surgeries, a forehead lift, thinned lips and a cheekbone surgery. Changes to his face were, in part, due to periods of significant weight loss. Jackson lost weight in the early 1980s because of a change in diet and a desire for "a dancer's body". Witnesses reported that Jackson was often dizzy and speculated that he was suffering from anorexia nervosa; periods of weight loss would become a recurring problem for the singer later in life. With the industry expecting another major hit, Jackson's first album in five years, Bad (1987), was highly anticipated. Bad had lower sales than Thriller, but was still a substantial commercial success. In the US, it spawned seven hit singles, five of which ("I Just Can't Stop Loving You", "Bad", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Man in the Mirror" and "Dirty Diana") reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, more than any other album. As of 2008, the album sold 30 million copies worldwide, including eight million shipments in the US.

The Bad World Tour began on September 12, 1987, and finished on January 14, 1989.In Japan alone, the tour had 14 sellouts and drew 570,000 people, nearly tripling the previous record of 200,000 in a single tour. Jackson broke a Guinness World Record when 504,000 people attended seven sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium. He performed a total of 123 concerts to a total audience of 4.4 million people, and gained a further Guinness World Record when the tour grossed him $125 million. During the trip he invited underprivileged children to watch for free and gave donations to hospitals, orphanages and other charities.

In 1988, Jackson released his first autobiography, Moon Walk, which took four years to complete and sold 200,000 copies. Jackson told of his childhood, his experience in The Jackson 5 and the abuse he suffered as a child. He also spoke of his plastic surgery, saying he had two rhinoplastic surgeries and the surgical creation of a cleft in his chin.In the book, he attributed the change in the structure of his face to puberty, weight loss, a strict vegetarian diet, a change in hair style and stage lighting. Moon Walk reached the top position on The New York Times best sellers' list. The musician then released a film called Moonwalker, which featured live footage, music videos, and a feature film that starred Jackson and Joe Pesci. Moonwalker debuted atop the Billboard Top Music Video Cassette chart, staying there for 22 weeks. It was eventually knocked off the top spot by Michael Jackson: The Legend Continues.

In March 1988, Jackson purchased land near Santa Ynez, California to build Neverland Ranch at a cost of $17 million. The 2,700-acre (11 km2) property had Ferris wheels, a menagerie, and a movie theater. A security staff of 40 patrolled the grounds. In 2003, the property was valued at approximately $100 million. In 1989, his annual earnings from album sales, endorsements, and concerts was estimated at $125 million for that year alone. Shortly afterwards, Jackson became the first Westerner to appear in a television ad in the Soviet Union.
Jackson's success resulted in his being dubbed the "King of Pop", a nickname conceived by actress and friend Elizabeth Taylor when she presented Jackson with an "Artist of the Decade" award in 1989, proclaiming him "the true king of pop, rock and soul". President George H. W. After Jackson's early 1982 contribution, "Someone In the Dark", to the film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which won him a Grammy for Best Album for Children, Epic issued his second album, Thriller. In what would turn out to be the apex of his career, the album remained in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 for 80 consecutive weeks, 37 at the peak. Seven singles from Thriller concurrently hit the Billboard Hot 100 top 10, including "Billie Jean", "Beat It" and "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'". Thriller went on to sell upwards of 109 million copies, making it the best-selling album of all time, causing Jackson biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli to muse that "at some point, Thriller stopped selling like a leisure item — like a magazine, a toy, tickets to a hit movie — and started selling like a household staple."
The period of Thriller was an extraordinarily lucrative one for Jackson, whose lawyer John Branca had negotiated what he boasted then as the highest royalty rate ever in the music industry, approximately $2 per album. Meanwhile, Jackson raked in profits from The Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller, a documentary by Jackson and John Landis which quickly sold over 350,000 copies. In addition, he began profiting from his image in earnest, as Michael Jackson dolls and other novelties hit the market.

Beyond its record-breaking success among fans, Thriller instituted multiple changes within the music industry. First, it raised the importance of albums, while challenging notions about how many prospective hits an album should contain. Second, it restored to the industry a sense of confidence in its ability to release high-level artistry during a time when profits had been sinking due to what one industry analyst called "the ruins of punk and the chic regions of synthesizer pop". Third, it helped bring MTV into its heyday, even as MTV helped fuel Thriller's success. Fourth, Thriller paved the way for other well-profitable acts such as Prince. The New York Times later said Jackson was a one-man rescue team for the music business. At its 25th anniversary, Thriller retained important influence over the music industry, artists, and American culture.

On March 25, 1983, he performed live on the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever television special, both with The Jackson 5 and on his own singing "Billie Jean". Debuting his signature dance move—the moonwalk—his performances during the event were seen by 47 million viewers during its initial airing, and drew comparisons to Elvis Presley's and The Beatles' appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.[38] The New York Times said, "The moonwalk that he made famous is an apt metaphor for his dance style. How does he do it? As a technician, he is a great illusionist, a genuine mime. His ability to keep one leg straight as he glides while the other bends and seems to walk requires perfect timing".

Jackson suffered a setback on January 27, 1984. While filming a Pepsi Cola commercial at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, he suffered second degree burns to his scalp after pyrotechnics accidentally set his hair on fire. Happening in front of a full house of fans during a simulated concert, the incident was the subject of heavy media scrutiny and elicited an outpouring of sympathy. PepsiCo settled a lawsuit out of court, and Jackson gave his $1.5 million settlement to the Brotman Medical Center in Culver City, California, where he had been treated, allowing the hospital to acquire the best available technology for treating severe burns; Brotman subsequently renamed its burn ward "Michael Jackson Burn Center" in his honor. Jackson had his third rhinoplasty shortly afterwards and grew self conscious about his appearance.

On May 14, 1984, Jackson was invited to the White House to receive an award presented by U.S. President Ronald Reagan. The award was given for his support of charities that helped people overcome alcohol and drug abuse. He won eight awards during the 1984 Grammys. Unlike later albums, Thriller did not have an official tour to promote it, but the 1984 Victory Tour, headlined by The Jacksons, showcased much of his new solo material to more than two million Americans. He donated his $5 million share from the Victory Tour to charity.

Jackson co-wrote the charity single "We Are the World" with Lionel Richie, which was released worldwide to aid the poor in Africa and the US. He was one of 39 music celebrities who performed on the record. The single became one of the best-selling singles of all time, with nearly 20 million copies sold and millions of dollars donated to famine relief.

While working with Paul McCartney on the two hit singles "The Girl Is Mine" and "Say Say Say", the pair became friendly, occasionally visiting one another. In one discussion, McCartney told Jackson about the millions of dollars he had made from music catalogs; he was earning approximately $40 million a year from other people's songs. Jackson then began a business career buying, selling and distributing publishing rights to music from numerous artists. Shortly afterwards, ATV Songs—a music catalogue holding thousands of songs, including most of the songs written by Lennon-McCartney between 1963–1973—was put up for sale.

Jackson took immediate interest in the catalog but was warned that he would face strong competition. Excited, he skipped around saying, "I don't care. I want those songs. Get me those songs Branca [his attorney]". Branca then contacted the attorney of McCartney, who clarified that his client was not interested in bidding; "It's too pricey". After Jackson had started negotiations, McCartney changed his mind and tried to persuade Yoko Ono to join him in a joint bid, she declined, so he pulled out. Jackson eventually beat the rest of the competition in negotiations that lasted 10 months, purchasing the catalog for $47.5 million. When McCartney found out he said, "I think it's dodgy to do things like that. To be someone's friend and then buy the rug they're standing on".

The Jackson 5 signed a new contract with CBS Records in June 1975, joining the Philadelphia International Records division, later Epic Records. As a result of legal proceedings, the group was renamed The Jacksons. After the name change, the band continued to tour internationally, releasing six more albums between 1976 and 1984. From 1976 to 1984, Michael Jackson was the lead songwriter of the group, writing hits such as "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)", "This Place Hotel" and "Can You Feel It". The Jacksons had a prime-time TV variety show on CBS, The Jacksons, from 1976 to 1977.
In 1978, Jackson starred as Scarecrow in the musical The Wiz. The musical scores were arranged by Quincy Jones, who formed a partnership with Jackson during the film's production and agreed to produce the singer's next solo album, Off the Wall.[21] In 1979, Jackson broke his nose during a complex dance routine. His subsequent rhinoplasty surgery was not a complete success; he complained of breathing difficulties that would affect his career. He was referred to Dr. Steven Hoefflin, who performed Jackson's second rhinoplasty and other subsequent operations.

Jones and Jackson jointly produced Off the Wall. Songwriters included Jackson, Heatwave's Rod Temperton, Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney. Released in 1979, it was the first album to generate four U.S. top 10 hits, including the chart-topping singles "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You".[23] Off the Wall reached number three on the Billboard 200 and has since been certified for 7 million shipments in the U.S. and eventually sold over 20 million copies worldwide.[24][25] In 1980, Jackson won three awards at the American Music Awards for his solo efforts: Favorite Soul/R&B Album, Favorite Male Soul/R&B Artist and Favorite Soul/R&B Single for "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough". Michael Joseph Jackson was born August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, an industrial suburb of Chicago.[5] The son of African-American parents Joseph Walter "Joe" Jackson and Katherine Esther Scruse, he was the seventh of nine children. His siblings are Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Randy and Janet. Joseph Jackson was a steel mill employee who often performed in an R&B band called The Falcons with his brother Luther. Jackson was raised as a Jehovah's Witness by his devout mother.Joseph Jackson has an additional daughter named Joh Vonnie Jackson who is actually the youngest sibling of Michael Jackson. The family lived at 2300 Jackson St., near Roosevelt Park; Michael often reflected that he wanted to play with neighborhood children but was rarely allowed because of the incessant rehearsals demanded by his father.

Jackson stated that he was physically and emotionally abused by his father from a young age, enduring incessant rehearsals, whippings and name-calling. However, he also credited his father's strict discipline as playing a large part in his success. In one altercation—later recalled by Marlon Jackson—Joseph held Michael upside down by one leg and "pummeled him over and over again with his hand, hitting him on his back and buttocks". Joseph would also trip or push his male children into walls. One night while Jackson was asleep, Joseph climbed into his room through the bedroom window. Jackson first spoke openly about his childhood abuse in a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey. Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, entertainer and businessman. The seventh child of the Jackson family, he made his debut as an entertainer in 1968 as a member of The Jackson 5. Stern’s sources say Jackson has been planning his escape for at least 16 months, but nobody, not even those who are closest to him, took him seriously, the expert said, “until now.”

“It’s unclear where he has gone – he mentioned South America, Canada, Russia, Kenya, Japan and Australia over the past year … all smokescreens, no doubt,” continued Stern.

“The best information I have suggests he is in Eastern Europe, in a medieval castle, possibly in Hungary. Right now, my sources are saying, ‘Leave him alone. Let him rest. Give him time.’

“They say that fans can help him recover by showing their love and respect for him. They say, ‘You better believe he is watching all the coverage.’ And they say fans can give Michael a boost by flashing peace signs to cameras – like he was famous for doing – and telling reporters they know he is alive.’”

The prison diary of Muchtar Pakpahan

As chairperson of the independent labour union SBSI, MUCHTAR PAKPAHAN was held responsible for the large labour demonstrations in Medan in April 1994. He was sentenced to four years jail. The following extracts from his diary were written at that time. In September 1995 the Supreme Court upheld his appeal and he was released. But in October 1996 Supreme Court Chief Judge Soerjono stunned legal opinion by cancelling the release order. Pakpahan now has to serve the full sentence. Worse, he faces subversion charges in relation to the 27 July 1996 Jakarta events.

About 10:30 pm on August 13, 1994, I was arrested by the police and taken to the Medan Detention Centre. There I was received by Lieutenants Sibeua and Purba. I was ordered to take off my shirt, trousers and watch and leave my bag there. I was then ordered to put on a dark blue prison shirt, number 042. I was not permitted to take any books with me, nor was I permitted to take any writing materials and I had to leave my shoes and sandals behind as well.

Books

I tried to negotiate about this and asked if I could be permitted to just take some books with me. Eventually I was allowed to take in the following books:

1. The Bible and some daily meditations and spiritual guides.
2. Dili Massacre Lies Exposed by George Aditjondro.
3. The Indonesia Business Library by Richard I. Mann.
4. Nonviolent Conflict Strategy by Peter Ackermann and Christopher Kruegler.

When the iron door of the Detention Centre was opened and I was invited to go in, for a moment I called out to the Lord Jesus: 'Strengthen me in this time of trial. I am here in Your Name, struggling for the sake of the lowly. Do not forsake me.' I passed through the iron gate of the Detention Centre with a feeling of strength and an iron will.

When I entered the Detention Centre wearing a uniform printed 'Detainee of the Principal Detention Centre, Medan - Number 042' all the detainees inside lined up in the central hallway and said 'Good evening, Pak Muchtar, and welcome!' I returned the greeting and was immediately taken to Block C, where I became an inmate. The other prisoners soon surrounded me. I knew one of them, Pinta Tarigan, a former classmate from the Law Faculty at North Sumatra University, Medan.

Stinking

This was to be my new life, jammed in, stinking and musty. Many of my friends' clothes had not been washed for a long time and many of them had not cleaned their teeth for a long time either. What was clear was that my head was starting to get dizzy and my nose was running like a tap.

At midnight the warders snarled and pounded on the doors and called out 'roll call', until everyone spilled out into the hallway and the detainees shouted out their number in turn: 'Block C - one, two, three, etc....21'. Then the warders called out 'Right Turn!' and they went back into the block. I followed this tensely and my head felt it was going to burst.

Then I went to the bed, opened the HKBP church's book of daily meditations. It was taken from Isaiah: 'O Lord, I am oppressed, be thou my security'. But I could not read it properly because my insides were in turmoil and my head was still dizzy.

There was one thing which pleased me. My fellow detainees were making a space for me. They were all being very kind and several amongst them repeatedly called out 'I have been spiritually uplifted to meet with the Father of us all.'

Thieves oath

One night I could not sleep at all. Besides the dizziness in my head and my running nose my body burned with a fever. At 6.00 am 'Roll call, roll call' was called out by the warder. I joined in the lineup and C Block counted out 'one, two, three...21'. This was followed by an oath which everybody said together:

One. Thieves oath. The thief swears:

No killing. No raping. No stealing from anybody poorer than ourselves; only the rest, especially the Chinese.

Two. Thieves prayer. The thief prays:

May the angels and the evil spirits come. Bless our food and drink so we can steal as much as possible from other people. Hey! May the blessed angels and spirits come to you through the advice of a sinner.

Three. Policeman's complaint.

The policeman spies a thief, he does not sleep, leaves his wife and children behind until the thief is arrested, interrogated and sent to the Prosecutor. The Prosecutor is bribed to give a light sentence. When there are no police arrests this is what they do. (Masturbatory motions with their hands). What's that?... They wank themselves!

End of oath.

Then we were ordered to reenter our respective detention blocks.

At around 1.00 pm I noticed two warders entering Block C and everybody went quiet and was scared to death. Without warning the warders bashed up three detainees. I saw it with my own eyes, so I asked: 'What did you do that for?'. 'New prisoners,' they replied.

Apparently it is a tradition that every new inmate should be done over by the warders. There were four shifts of warders, so the new inmates were done over four times. My blood boiled wanting to fight back.

Strategy money

Before breakfast, the prison doctor came to perform a physical examination. He gave me a prescription following which I asked to meet with Sumarty, the Treasurer of the SBSI labour union, who happened to be in Medan. When he appeared in front of the iron bars of my cell I asked the commandant of the guards, Rinaldi, if my prescription could be brought in by Sumarty. Instead he got angry and replied that 'all prisoners are the same.' My blood boiled and I slapped him while I called out 'I am a special person here! Get it! Police are shit! Police are dogs!'

My friend told me, three times a day every day we had to get the money ready depending on which shift of guards was on duty. Breakfast money. Lunch money. Dinner money. Drink money. Strategy money and room money. The strategy money was given to the guard on the night shift so we were not punished. The room money was given to the lunch time guard - Rp 3,000 per person if you had a guest as well as door money which you had to pay up front. Anybody who had family visitors and did not pay door money got thrashed, as happened to a prisoner named Duha on Friday, August 26, 1994.

My heart bled because of this brutal exploitation. But I gradually came to understand the root of the problem. On one occasion at 2.00 am I went outside the block into a small alley in the detention centre and saw a guard asleep on a chair. After this occasion I asked several amongst them for a few answers. They had been paid the same low salaries for a period of ten years. They received Rp 240,000 per month (AU$130) and there was no daily transport or meal allowance for working every day. That still had to be taken from their monthly salary, leaving very little for their families in my opinion, while they had great responsibilities.

On Tuesday, August 16, my spirits rose. Around midday I was called to go to Lieutenant Purba's room. I met my beloved wife there together with Abdul Aziz, an attorney from the Legal Aid Institute in Medan. We embraced and she encouraged me. I asked how the children were and she told me they were fine and she passed on three letters from my three children. When I read the letters the tears just poured down my cheeks.

Aceh

(Pakpahan was later moved to the jail in Medan, where conditions were a little better.)

What is interesting is that that afternoon as well as receiving visitors I met the 'subversive convicted criminal' Iwan Dukun.

In the city of Medan, Iwan Dukun is famous as the leader of a gang of thugs. However, he is quite a wealthy thug. He was sentenced to 13 years jail for subversion. He was convicted of financing the Acehnese separatists the government calls Security Disturbing Gangs (GPK), but who prefer to be known as the Free Aceh Movement.

He himself denied it. On several occasions he had actually helped pay the Indonesian Armed Forces during an operation to destroy the separatists. This was also confirmed by the hatred which a number of GPK leaders nursed towards him. They even said that this Iwan Dukun was once on a GPK Aceh hit list. From the way he spoke I concluded that he had been involved in a quarrel with a lieutenant-colonel in the Number 1 Military District Command who had the authority to make trouble. There was a rivalry between them in commerce and women. So this Iwan Dukun was set up as a source of funds for the GPK.

The witness who gave the evidence that Iwan Dukun had given financial assistance to the GPK was tampered with. In order to get a confession he was detained in the Gaperta Detention Centre and tortured. Court

Today, Monday, 19 September, 1994, was my day in court. I know justice in my case was like a scene from a play, where I would respond like an actor being forced to do this or that. I went outside the block and greeted all the inmates, asking them to pray for me.

We left at 8:30 am. This was the protocol for the trip to court. In front were six motor cycles led by the Chief. Behind was a sedan patrol car unit followed by the Prosecutors' vehicle carrying the detainee. Inside were two policemen and a person dressed in civilian clothes.

Following our car were yet another six cars including the car of my attorney, Siburian, and dozens of motor cycles. Our vehicle was a Jeep Taft. Police Major Panjang sat beside the driver, while in the back seat I sat in the middle between Prosecutor Manik on my left and Prosecutor Henry on my right.

Our group sped past the Sunggal market, through Jalan Gatot Subroto and Jalan Gajah Mada, entered Jalan Diponegoro and eventually reached the courthouse. The trip was uninterrupted, but the police were monitoring on their walky talkies, and lots of people showed interest along the road.

On arrival out the front of the courthouse it was quite noisy and the crowd chased after the car with the detainees in it. These were journalists and a TV crew. I said a prayer to strengthen me and ask for the Lord to be beside me, all this in His Holy Name.

On getting out of the car I was flanked by two tall police officers, J. Butar-Butar and Binsar P. (Pakpahan). It felt as if my feet were not treading on the ground. Journalists who tried to take a picture and greet me were rudely shoved aside. I heard 'Long live Muchtar Pakpahan!'

Cripples

As soon as I went into the Tanjung Gusta Medan Jail I noticed several people inside who were cripples. If it wasn't a problem with the right leg it was a problem with the left leg. As a consequence of my questioning they all said it was caused by the police who had arrested them. I had encountered the same thing in the Detention Centre. There were more than twenty cripples in the Jail and the Detention Centre together.

The way in which they experienced this was always the same. After they were arrested they were taken to the Medan-Belawan Toll Road or to the Helvetiah Golf Links. The police would take them and order them to run away. Because they knew what would happen to them none of them wanted to run away. If they refused the following negotiations would ensue:

The police would say 'unless you pay us not to we will shoot this bullet into your right leg.' The price would vary between Rp 350,000 and Rp 1,000,000 per bullet. If they could pay, their leg was not shot. On the other hand, if they could not afford to pay their leg was shot full of all the bullets in the pistol. The number of shots usually varied between one and six.

After they had been shot they were usually operated on at Pirngadi Hospital, certainly under police supervision. There they were done over again. The Elang Room was also considered 'the room of hell', it was a special clinic for suspects. When the victims could not pay the amount of money the police had asked for they would be tortured. They were ordered to drink infected water, drink their own urine, or had their wounds seared with carbolic acid. Some had their leg broken or their ankle dislocated.

I asked the police why this happened, and they replied that the prisoners were shot to teach them a lesson because they were hardened recidivists.

Indeed I discovered it was true that almost all who had been shot had been recidivists. Their crimes were generally armed robbery and theft. There were also two victims who were not recidivists but who had had problems with the Chinese. Their problems originated with Chinese shopkeepers. One of them was called Alexam Hasibuan.

Muchtar Pakpahan was born in Pematang Siantar in December 1953. He has a postgraduate degree in law from the University of Indonesia (1989), and has taught law at Nommensen University in Medan and at two private universities in Jakarta. He has been involved with legal aid since the early 1980s, and has been chairman of the SBSI since 1992. He and his wife Rosintan Marpaung have three children. David Williams was the translator.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono born 9 September 1949), is an Indonesian retired military general and the sixth and current President of Indonesia. Yudhoyono won the 2004 Indonesian presidential election defeating incumbent President Megawati Sukarnoputri. Widely known as "SBY", he was sworn into office on 20 October 2004, together with Jusuf Kalla as Vice President. He is currently running for re-election together with Boediono.

Early life

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was born in Tremas, a village in Arjosari, Pacitan Regency, East Java, to a lower-middle class family and is the son of Raden Soekotjo and Siti Habibah. Since he was a child, he wanted to be in the army. Yudhoyono developed a reputation as an extremely talented student in addition to being an academic achiever, excelling in writing poems, short stories, and play-acting. Yudhoyono was also talented in music and sport, reflected when he and his friends established a volleyball club called Klub Rajawali and a band called Gaya Teruna.

When he was in fifth grade, Yudhoyono visited the Indonesian Armed Forces Academy (AKABRI). After seeing the soldiers training there and perhaps inspired by his own father's career, Yudhoyono became determined to join Indonesian Armed Forces and become a soldier. Yudhoyono had originally wanted to get into the AkABRI after graduating from high school in 1968, however, he missed out because he did not register in time.

Yudhoyono then became a lecturer at the Tenth of November Institute of Technology before entering the Vocational Education Development Center in Malang, East Java. There, he was able to prepare everything for the next phase of his education at Akabri. Yudhoyono officially entered AKABRI in 1970 after passing the test in Bandung

Military career

Yudhoyono spent three years at Indonesian Armed Forces Academy (AKABRI) and became the Commander of the Cadet Corps Division there. He graduated from AKABRI in 1973, and as the best graduate of the year, received the prestigious Adhi Makayasa medal from President Suharto.

After graduating, Yudhoyono joined the Army Strategic Reserve (Kostrad) and became a platoon commander in the 330th Airborne Battalion. Aside from leading his troops, Yudhoyono was also tasked with giving the battalion soldiers lessons on general knowledge and English. Yudhoyono's proficiency in English was one of the reasons why he was sent to the United States to undertake the Airborne and Ranger Courses at Fort Benning in 1975.

Yudhoyono returned to Indonesia in 1976 where he became a platoon commander in the 305th Battalion and assigned to Indonesian-occupied East Timor. Yudhoyono had several tours of duty there and, like many other Indonesian officers involved in the occupation of East Timor, was accused of committing war crimes. However, Yudhoyono has never been charged with any specific act. From East Timor, Yudhoyono became a mortar platoon commander in 1977, an operations officer for an airborne brigade from 1977 to 1978, and a battalion commander at Kostrad from 1979 to 1981. Yudhoyono then spent 1981 and 1982 working at the Army headquarters.

While working at the Army headquarters, Yudhoyono was sent to the United States again, this time to participate in the Infantry Officer Advanced Course at Fort Benning and in training with the 82nd Airborne Division. Yudhoyono also spent time in Panama and went through the jungle warfare school. When Yudhoyono returned in 1983, he was made Commander of the Infantry Trainers' School. It was not long before he was abroad again, this time to Belgium and West Germany, to undertake the Antitank weapons Course. In 1985, Yudhoyono also took a Battalion Commando Course in Malaysia.

From 1986 to 1988, Yudhoyono served with the Udayana Area Military Command, which covers Bali and the Lesser Sunda Islands. Yudhoyono was a battalion commander from 1986 to 1988 and was part of the operational staff in 1988. In 1989, Yudhoyono became a lecturer at the Army Staff College (Seskoad) and delivered a presentation entitled "ABRI's Professionalism at the Present and in the Future". Together with Agus Wirahadikusumah, Yudhoyono published a book entitled "The Challenges of Development".

Whilst at Seskoad, Yudhoyono also took the opportunity to further his own military education. He went to the US Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. While in the United States, he also took the opportunity to get an MA in business management from Webster University in 1991.

In 1992, Yudhoyono was transferred to the Army Information Department and worked as a speech writer for General Edi Sudrajat, the Army Chief of Staff. In 1993, when Edi became Commander of the Military of Indonesia (ABRI), Yudhoyono joined Edi's personal staff. Edi did not last long as ABRI Commander and Yudhoyono was then transferred back to Kostrad where he became a brigade commander. A year later, Yudhoyono was the Operations Assistant at Jaya (Jakarta) Military Area Command before taking command IV/Diponegoro Military Area Command in Central Java. Yudhoyono had one more stint overseas when he became Indonesia's chief military observer of the United Nation Peacekeeping Force in Bosnia in 1995-96.

When Yudhoyono returned to Indonesia, he was made KODAM Jaya chief of staff before being appointed as KODAM II/Sriwijaya commander. In this position, Yudhoyono was responsible military operations in southern Sumatra. He served in this position until 1997, when he was appointed chief of staff for social-political affairs. At the same time, he was also appointed Chairman of the ABRI Faction in the People's Consultative Assembly General Session and participated in Suharto's election to a seventh term as President.

During the days which would lead to Suharto's resignation in May 1998, Yudhoyono and pro-reform ABRI officers conducted meetings and discussions with Nurcholish Madjid, a secular pro-reform Muslim leader. From his discussions, Yudhoyono accepted the fact that Suharto should resign but like the ABRI officers who went to the meeting with him, was reluctant to withdraw their support of Suharto publicly, much less ask for Suharto's resignation.[ Nevertheless the pressure would eventually become too much for Suharto, who resigned on 21 May 1998.

As Indonesia entered the reform era, ABRI's popularity, because of its association with Suharto, was at an all time low. To de-emphasize ABRI's political role, Yudhoyono's Chief of Staff for social-political affairs was renamed chief of staff for territorial affairs and in 1999, ABRI was renamed TNI and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) was split off. At this time, Yudhoyono's popularity began to increase as he offered ideas and concepts to reform the military and nation. He did this by combining the strong reformist sentiment of the time with TNI's concern for security and stability. Yudhoyono then became known in the media as "the thinking general"

After entering the Star Mode, you cannot exit until the power meter will drain out, so you have to wait until there are notes appearing, else the Star Power will be wasted. You can also use Star Power to help you get through tough parts of songs that you can`t get through otherwise.
